Landfill & Transfer Stations

The Islands Solid Waste Landfill is owned and operated by the North Coast Regional District (NCRD) and is located about 15 km north of Port Clements. The Landfill operates under a Regional Solid Waste Management Plan which has been approved by the Ministry of Environment. The landfill is run as a multi-purpose facility providing collection for garbage, recycling, tires, engine oil, propane tanks, small appliances, controlled waste disposal and landfill service to commercial and residential customers.

The landfill underwent a progressive closure of three of its oldest sections in 2010. At current filling rates the life expectancy of the Islands landfill is 2041.

Residential and commercial customers may dispose of garbage at the landfill or one of three transfer stations. A typical residential load, on the back of a small pick-up, loaded with domestic garbage would cost $10. Please refer to Bylaw No. 685, 2023 regarding Island Solid Waste Management Regulation, Fees, and Charges for updated information on fees and charges associated with using the landfill and transfer stations.
